EVERLEGAL Partner moderated the VII International Criminal Law Forum

On February 11, the VII International Criminal Law Forum took place in Kyiv, traditionally organised by the publishing house Yurydychna Praktyka. The final session of the event was dedicated to plea agreements, moderated by Taras Ivanenko, a partner at EVERLEGAL.

Taras emphasized the relevance of plea agreements in the context of anti-corruption criminal proceedings, highlighting the need for detailed discussion among legal practitioners. According to him, the introduction of this institution in Ukraine is not only a significant step in the evolution of the legal system but also a necessary tool in the fight against corruption. For many years, this topic has sparked lively debates within the legal community, leading to delays in improving legislation.

In his view, the main issue remained the effectiveness of applying plea agreements in corruption cases. Initially, their use was limited due to the lack of clear legal mechanisms, complicating their implementation. However, following amendments to the Criminal and Criminal Procedure Codes of Ukraine, which came into force on November 1, 2024, these issues were partially resolved. The new provisions have established clearer regulations for this institution, aiming to enhance the effectiveness of anti-corruption efforts.

Taras Ivanenko also noted that while the improvement process is ongoing, it is crucial to achieve a unified approach to the practical application of this mechanism.
