On 11 March 2022, Ukraine connected to the Continental European power system through ENTSO-E membership. Physical operations to synchronise the Ukrainian power system with the Continental European power system were performed on 16 March 2022.

What is ENTSO-E?

ENTSO-E (European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity) – is the association of the transmission system operators ("TSO"). As of now, it unites 39 TSOs from 35 European countries. TSOs are responsible for the coordinated operation of the European power system, the largest interconnected electrical grid in the world.

What are the consequences of Ukraine's membership in ENTSO-E?

  • In the event of emergencies in the power system or damage to Ukraine's energy infrastructure, Ukraine will be able to receive emergency assistance and electricity supplies from the Continental European power system. Before Ukraine connected to the Continental European power system, Ukraine's power system was synchronised with the power systems of Belarus, Moldova and the Russian Federation and depended on emergency assistance and electricity supply from these countries.
  • Ukrainian electricity producers, which are part of the United Energy System of Ukraine, will be able to export their electricity to the European electricity market after completing certain organisational and technical measures (including testing the stability of synchronised energy systems, collecting statistics, etc.).
  • The Ukrainian electricity market will become more attractive to foreign investors. In the foreseeable future, the electricity produced in Ukraine can be sold on the European electricity market.
  • The share of renewable energy sources in the Ukrainian energy market will be increased. Access to the infrastructural and production capacities of the Continental European power system will provide an opportunity to accelerate the pace of development of renewable energy in Ukraine, which was previously limited.
